The Triple Bottom Line

Picture
The triple bottom line, or 3BL is often referred to as a sustainable management tool.  3BL refers to the relationships between economic bottom lines, social costs, and environmental costs. The best thing about the triple bottom line is that it makes people think about the relationships. The worst thing about it is that it is relatively difficult to measure business activities that purport to support investments in 3BL investments.

Much of this difficulty is due to obfuscation and ignorance by economic systems (traditional economic indicators and measurements call environmental and social contexts “externalities’, and downplay the values. However, real 3BL investors consider things like human capital, fair wages, and the environmental impacts and costs that society must bear in order for any given business to post a profit.

There are solutions here that point to 3BL as a sustainable opportunity.

There are growing discussions around equity. There is a profound exploration of ecological economics that places quantifiable values on such things as green space v. developed space.  These discussions and quantifiable values help us understand how our business models affect the planet that we live on and the people that inhabit it in ways that transcend traditional consumer growth models.
